A project with the aim of creating a typeface and using it in a fanzine with the theme "The New Dadaism".
BRIEF
Brief: The aim of the project was to design a typeface for a sixteen-page fanzine based on a theme chosen by the teams.
CONCEPT
Concept: Can be defined art what is created with artificial intelligence? This was the question my group asked at the end of 2023, when generative AI was still taking its first infant steps in text generation. This led us to draw a parallel between this historical moment and the Dadaist period, defining it as: “The third digital Dadaism.”
PROCESS
Naming: The name chosen for the fanzine is made up of the repetition of “AI,” the acronym for “Artificial Intelligence,” which visually and alliteratively recalls the name of the movement “DADA.” Design: The project began with an analysis of how Artificial Intelligence behaves in text generation, highlighting how it often makes mistakes by adding or removing elements. These flaws led us to draw a parallel with children's writing. Building on the concept of error, we designed a typographic grid capable of simulating the imperfections of AI-generated letters, blending them with the aesthetics and irreverent thinking of the Dadaist movement. We then developed the typeface using Glyphs, a software dedicated to type design. Articles: Inside the fanzine—dedicated to exploring the theme of art created by artificial intelligence—there are three contributions from an architect, a musician, and a writer. Each shares their opinion on the topic, explaining how AI has influenced their work. In addition to these contributions, the publication also analyzes how the creative process is set to evolve with the rise of AI. Layout: The layout is inspired by Dadaist aesthetics, combining an irregular and dynamic composition with a thoughtful use of white space. The articles are accompanied by images treated with halftone and black-and-white effects, evoking the visual language of the time.
